I recently needed to replace the railing and pickets along my 90+ foot elevated deck due to rot. I was lucky that someone suggested I call Sawyer Batton (540-910-3486), who runs a remodeling business and is highly skilled in a variety of construction repairs. I had seen pictures of hog wire deck railings in the past and was intrigued. Sawyer had actually completed one recently and showed me pictures that finalized my decision. He did an excellent job on my deck, not only accommodating unusual angles and corners but also replacing structural pieces that were outside the original scope and needed to be corrected to avoid future problems and greater cost. My husband and I have a stone walkway from our driveway through our garden to our front door. Over the last few years it had literally been breaking up and falling apart, due in large part to lousy construction 12 years ago. It looked like a fairly simple job until the stones were being taken up. It was not simple. We recently hired Will Walter (540-256-9640) and his brother Tanner Walter (540-451-0906) of Rustic Stone & Restoration, LLC of Waynesboro to diagnose why it was such a mess and then to tackle the job. We now have a walkway that is much lovelier than it was 12 years ago, and it has been repaired in a way that will not begin to fall apart with the next ice storm, hurricane, or heavy wheelbarrow rolling across it. They did a truly great job. They were professional in all ways and a delight to work with. They do stonework of all kinds, with a specialty in native stone. We couldn’t recommend them more highly. Last month, my son and I spent a Sunday ripping out our hot tub. (Mice had moved in over the winter.) By that evening, we had a pile in the front yard with nowhere to put it. That night I messaged Adam Ellinger, the owner of Nelson Storage and Dumpster in Afton (540-292-3767, adam@nsdumpster.com). He had a dumpster in our driveway Monday. Andy with Lane's Appliance Service (540-949-6888, CustomerService@LanesAppliance.com) arrived promptly after an easy appointment set up to fix a rattling noise coming from our washer. Great communication; arrived when they said they would, which was within a day of booking. It turned out not to be anything serious. I was left in no doubt that Andy was reliable and honest. He could have spun (excuse the pun) the appointment out and charged us for parts we didn’t need, etc., but he didn’t. It felt like an old-fashioned way to do business–nothing flashy, just seasoned tech who could explain clearly what the problem was. The call-out charge was $180. Worth every cent. Heartily recommend. We highly recommend Blue Ridge Audio Video (BRAV), located in Wingina. We needed three televisions mounted on walls at our home in Stoney Creek (two 55-inch TVs and one 65-inch TV). We chose BRAV because of their experience in doing such work, and wanted to support a business located here in Nelson County. Spencer Pushard, owner of BRAV, did a very professional installation of all three TVs, which included some additional wiring to interface with our audio systems. I have used their services multiple times this past year. Their staff are very knowledgeable and experienced. Most recently, I needed professional plumbers because our water heater started to leak during the recent cold snap, so I contacted Peace of Mind. Mariah and Dexter came to the house the next morning to assess the situation. By mid-afternoon, Mariah, Dexter, and Jimmy installed a new water heater. He quickly diagnosed the problem with my dryer, ordered the necessary parts and completed the repair. These included a kitchen faucet, a bathroom faucet, and a leaking commode. Within one day of calling, my appointment was scheduled. Mariah and “Junior” arrived promptly and determined my needs. They were professional, polite, personable, and skilled to complete the work within 1.5 hours. They were attentive to maintaining a tidy workspace and provided some necessary additional water lines as well. Peace of Mind responded in 3.5 hours to a plumbing call for help on a leaking pipe under a bathroom sink, which was dripping water in the room below. Both feed lines were quickly replaced. Additionally, I had them inspect a slow leak under a toilet base. I had been able to stop it by tightening down bolts very slightly; they found that the toilet bowl wax gasket was leaking, and it was replaced. We found Peace of Mind Property Services (434-361-1804) to be a good source of expertise for household repairs, even the odd balls. (It is nice they have an office manager to help coordinate their services.) For example, we needed to install a new frame for the sliding glass doors in our shower off the master bedroom. After checking with Peace of Mind to ensure they could handle the task, we ordered a frame kit and carefully checked the width of our glass doors that would be used in the new frame. The two pro installers had to cut the aluminum frame to fit, carefully caulk it, and so on; this was not a job for a handyman. To get caulking tight, they came back the next day. They read the directions that came with the new frame and didn't miss a step. For all the time it took, the bill was reasonable. The two techs were pleasant, neat, and professional. The new glass doors slide better than ever. I just had an outstanding experience with a plumber recommended in the WBB directory. We had a leaking pipe under the kitchen sink. The main water had to be shut off.  Peace of Mind Property Services' Muriah Kurpel and helper (434-361-2804) came within a few hours to our mountain home and replaced the pipe and valve in no time flat. We recently had a pesky black bear destroy the exhaust attached to our Rinnai water heater, creating a dangerous level of carbon monoxide in our crawl space and the first and second floors of our home. Our Prolink security system (434-984-2524 in Charlottesville) tried to alert us, but we were out of reach, so the security system alerted Wintergreen Fire and Rescue. When we arrived home, the fire department had already entered our home, diagnosed the problem, and was nearing the completion of their call. We would like to thank our emergency responders for their work. However, we were unfamiliar with the Knox Box system until this event. We recommend that property owners here visit the Wintergreen Fire and Rescue website and educate themselves about the Knox Box. See related entry “Knox Box System” for more details.
