I recently needed to replace the railing and pickets along my 90+ foot elevated deck due to rot. I was lucky that someone suggested I call Sawyer Batton (540-910-3486), who runs a remodeling business and is highly skilled in a variety of construction repairs. I had seen pictures of hog wire deck railings in the past and was intrigued. Sawyer had actually completed one recently and showed me pictures that finalized my decision. He did an excellent job on my deck, not only accommodating unusual angles and corners but also replacing structural pieces that were outside the original scope and needed to be corrected to avoid future problems and greater cost. I would like to add my voice to the accolades for Peace of Mind Property Management Services (434-361-1804, peaceofmind-ps.com) located off Beech Grove Road. I have used their services multiple times this past year. Their staff are very knowledgeable and experienced. Most recently, I needed professional plumbers because our water heater started to leak during the recent cold snap, so I contacted Peace of Mind. Mariah and Dexter came to the house the next morning to assess the situation. By mid-afternoon, Mariah, Dexter, and Jimmy installed a new water heater. After being told by Samsung that there was no one in the Wintergreen area to service their products, I was fortunate to find Josh Hatter. He quickly diagnosed the problem with my dryer, ordered the necessary parts and completed the repair. I highly recommend Peace of Mind Property Services (434-361-1804) for residential plumbing services. Based on the accolades of this family-owned company touted by local friends and WBB, I reached out to have three services performed. These included a kitchen faucet, a bathroom faucet, and a leaking commode. Within one day of calling, my appointment was scheduled. Mariah and “Junior” arrived promptly and determined my needs. They were professional, polite, personable, and skilled to complete the work within 1.5 hours. They were attentive to maintaining a tidy workspace and provided some necessary additional water lines as well. They ensured that all repairs/replacements were optimally performing and removed all older parts. Their pricing was very reasonable. Peace of Mind responded in 3.5 hours to a plumbing call for help on a leaking pipe under a bathroom sink, which was dripping water in the room below. Both feed lines were quickly replaced. Additionally, I had them inspect a slow leak under a toilet base. I had been able to stop it by tightening down bolts very slightly; they found that the toilet bowl wax gasket was leaking, and it was replaced. We found Peace of Mind Property Services (434-361-1804) to be a good source of expertise for household repairs, even the odd balls. (It is nice they have an office manager to help coordinate their services.) For example, we needed to install a new frame for the sliding glass doors in our shower off the master bedroom. After checking with Peace of Mind to ensure they could handle the task, we ordered a frame kit and carefully checked the width of our glass doors that would be used in the new frame. The two pro installers had to cut the aluminum frame to fit, carefully caulk it, and so on; this was not a job for a handyman. To get caulking tight, they came back the next day. They read the directions that came with the new frame and didn't miss a step. For all the time it took, the bill was reasonable. The two techs were pleasant, neat, and professional. The new glass doors slide better than ever. I just had an outstanding experience with a plumber recommended in the WBB directory. We had a leaking pipe under the kitchen sink. The main water had to be shut off.  Peace of Mind Property Services' Muriah Kurpel and helper (434-361-2804) came within a few hours to our mountain home and replaced the pipe and valve in no time flat. We would like to recommend Troup Custom Carpentry for the amazing job they did replacing our deck and screened porch. From the initial meeting to discuss our requirements to the final inspection (troupcustomcarpentry.com, tj13631@gmail.com, 434-328-0374). TJ Troup and his crew worked methodically to design and build a quality construction project that included TimberTech decking, Westbury railing, drainage system, screened under-deck area, Alexa-controlled lighting and fans, and LP wrapped posts and beams to provide a very finished look inside and out. TJ’s decision to cantilever the deck to hide the gutter system on the outside of the screened porch gave the deck a much cleaner look. These unique structural design decisions and craftsmanship resulted in praise from the county inspector during the final inspection. We have a deck to enjoy for decades. We are extremely happy with the total experience. TJ and his crew were fun to work with, reliable, and always communicated with us on progress, schedule, and any construction changes that needed to be made. Due to age and water damage, we recently needed to replace a sliding back door on our home. After a series of bids, we selected T.J. Troup, owner of Troup Custom Carpentry (TroupCustomCarpentry.com, 434-328-0374). TJ was not only competitive in his pricing, he was attentive to the need to ensure the new door matched well with two other sliding glass doors on the left and right; he was an effective communicator as we waited for the door to be delivered and the weather permitting installation; and he used a preferred trade partner-local painter to very effectively match up the interior and exterior paint as well as match the interior portion of the door’s stain with other stained areas in the room. Once the materials and weather provided the opportunity to install the door, TJ and his team were prompt in completing the installation as promised in one day. I wholeheartedly recommend Rob Moses and Blue Ridge Building and Home Safety Solutions (434-202-4054, brhomesafety.com) who we hired to renovate our two decks and front porch. His work is spectacular. From the planning and estimates, to the construction itself, every detail was meticulous, and timely. Our old wooden decks were peeling and splintered. He replaced them with TimberTech, which will never require painting, looks fabulous, and is extremely strong and sturdy. He also replaced the supporting posts, which had rotted below the surface, securing them with concrete and metal at ground level. The new railings are sleek and afford a better view. We contracted with Rob Moses (Blue Ridge Building and Home Safety Solutions, 434-202-4054) to install handrails for our front porch. He helped us select a style that blends perfectly with our existing entryway. He also installed handrails for our steps leading down into the garage and grip bars for our large shower, which blend in perfectly with the existing shower hardware. As an additional security measure, he installed a Ring door camera at our front entrance and a camera in our back areas. We were pleased with all the safety measures installed "just in case," although we did not expect to need them. "Just in case" came quickly, however. If you need a new roof, I would like to recommend Quality Enterprise, 65 Whipporwill Way, Waynesboro. After a home inspection verified that we needed a new roof, we contacted Roy Robinson & Tim Bradley to submit a bid. Roy arrived with their estimate in hand. They did not need to walk the roof, measure, and calculate the supplies and time estimate because they used a satellite service to determine the time & costs. Other roofers had spent an hour or so measuring and inspecting. Photos provided by the home inspector helped pinpoint problem areas. The men and women who did the work quickly and efficiently did the work and cleaned up all debris in 3 1/2 days. We finally got around to replacing our 20-year-old tankless LP gas water heater. They are complex devices (gas, water, electrical, venting), so we carefully shopped around for an experienced plumber. We turned to Matt Morris, the only plumber at Albermarle Heating & Air (434-293-4556), who was here all day with an assistant to install a new Rinnia unit. Last week I had a good experience with Albemarle Heating and Air (434-293-4556), a large operation serving several localities around us. They are not cheap, but I was impressed with the professionalism and craftsmanship of the plumber and his trainee. They replaced a worn-out (noisy) pressure-reducing valve and primary shut-off under the house, fixed a difficult leak on the pipes coming from the water heater and, (since they were here) put in a new basket on the sink in the wet bar. (I felt lazy having them to do it, but it turned out to be not an easy task even for the pros.) They do “give you the opportunity” to have a service contract, but the discounts only make sense (and then, only maybe) if you have them always do both plumbing and HVAC. In response to the request for recommendations for gas fireplace maintenance, I have used Chambers Contracting in Fisherville (540-307 1217). James Chambers responded to my request within two days instead of some of the businesses in the Yellow Pages who took weeks or more to respond. He has a fixed price for a visit and was very efficient and professional. I was happy with his response and his work; he left my fireplace in good working order and cleaned up the workspace. I highly recommend Brad Davis, the owner of Rockfish Valley Construction. He specializes in carpentry but is also a licensed and insured contractor. He recently took our idea of creating custom built-in shelving for our mud room and quickly turned it into reality. The finished shelving looks like it is part of the original home, and will offer us some much-needed storage. He added trim to coordinate with the rest of our home and moved the air and electrical vents to the base so they were still usable. If you have a gravel driveway that needs re-grading and graveling, I highly recommend calling David at Josh’s Paving. (540-932-2033). After a very long search for someone who would actually show up when they said they would, I found Josh’s Paving in the older recommendations of the WBB. While the recommendations were for paved driveways, I took a chance and called them for my gravel driveway. David returned my call immediately, showed up when he said he would, and did a terrific job. They made our driveway look beautiful. We highly recommend the father-son team (Randy Teter and Steven Teter) of Custom Ornamental Iron in Waynesboro for custom-made indoor and outdoor handrails and any ornamental ironwork. They are skilled craftsmen who have worked together for 20 years, creating amazing works of art. All of their work is customized and specifically fitted to your needs. After consulting with us and making some wise suggestions, last week they installed four different handrails they crafted for us, leading up steps and around our front porch. The workmanship is beautiful. They stayed true to their initial estimate and completed the work in a timely manner.  They do not have a website; all of their marketing comes from word-of-mouth. We initially learned about them through the Wintergreen Bulletin Board's subscribers' recommendations. We could not be happier with what they created for us. I would like to recommend Randy Teter and his son Steven for custom ornamental ironwork. They designed and built wrought iron hand railings for the front of our house.
