He has started his own business specializing in offering tree maintenance/removal, shrub trimming/pruning, and removal at a reasonable cost. I would like to recommend Lauro Morales (434-409-9971) for yard work and odd jobs in and around the house. Lauro had worked for me in my mountain home and now in my Stoney Creek home. He has planted trees, relocated plants from the mountain to my Stoney Creek home, waters and weeds when we are away for long periods, and just recently, he cleaned the screened-in porch, including the “top to bottom” furniture covers, all walls, screens, and railings. Looks like a “brand new” porch. Lauro has also helped us with chores around the house, such as hanging pictures on high walls. Wintergreen Hardware keeps a small selection of lumber on hand, so I checked with them to see if they had a 10-ft 1 x 6. They didn't have one, but owner Jackson Cox was picking up lumber the following day and offered to drop it off the next day at our house. I had my board before 8 am and didn't have to drive to a Lowe's or Home Depot for one piece of lumber. The store is constantly expanding it offerings. The staff routinely go out of their way to help with products, advice, and old-fashioned hospitality. My wife was having trouble countersinking a bolt into one of her projects. She went to our hardware store to ask for ideas. Jackson did it in quick order at no charge. After three visits in two hours with the same gallon of stain for my deck, I confidently recommend buying Benjamin Moore paint from Wintergreen Hardware (434-361-1919). Jackson Cox demonstrated impressive expertise with the state-of-the-art color blending equipment he installed at his store a few months ago. It's a long story, but due to a mismatch on a can of paint from elsewhere purchased two years ago, I asked Cox to do some seat-of-pants custom programming that–finally–got the color match I needed to save me from having to paint our back deck twice. I don't recall a time when Danny Watson or his crew at Wintergreen Hardware didn't have what we needed for a household repair. The True Value hardware store in Nellysford has come up with parts to connect an LP stove, install an oddball kitchen sink, and solve an electrical problem. But, they don't have a 2 by 4, right? Wrong. You'll find bait for mice and other pest control products that work. You can buy just one nail, bolt or screw there. Paints, stains of every type. It's where I shop for grass seed, fertilizer, mulch and landscaping rock. Chain, rope, and wire is custom cut. Lots of flashlights. I needed a can of tennis balls; they had it. Best of all, they see themselves as problem solvers. (When I needed a 5-inch wide piece of PVC pipe that was 10-inches long and a cap for each end, it was no problem for Wintergreen Hardware.) Look no further for tree service! Upon the advice of a neighboring homeowners' association, we hired Weber Tree Service to trim back the trees surrounding our property. What's not to like? Kevin Weber promptly responded, was flexible, scheduled the work, and stayed in touch until the work day. An added touch was Kevin's exuberant personality. Following what others have recently said in the WBB, I'm submitting another recommendation for Daryl Morse (text him at 434-944-4378) because he has recently started offering his services here as a full-time job. I want to see him stay busy. I like what he does and how he does it. He did a professional job trimming our shrubs (and we are particular about how it is done) and cleaning out our gutters. For the past two seasons, Daryl Morse and his crew have cleaned my yard and two dry creek beds of leaves and branches that have accumulated over the winter. Daryl is very pleasant to work with, and in 2 1/2 hours, his crew had my yard looking great again. Unlike other crews I have had, Daryl actually brings a dump trailer and removes the dead leaves and, branches and sticks. His crew also used a weed-eater to trim around my walkways and ground-level porches. This is now Daryl's full-time job, so he is available during the week as well as on weekends. I found Darryl Morse on the WBB Directory and used him to take down a couple of big dead and dying trees that could fall and damage both my mountain home and possibly my neighbors. He did a yeoman’s job at a fair price, took care of the debris, and left things cleaner and neater than before he started. I heartily recommend Daryl Morse for your tree work. He has helped me for years; he cuts down and breaks up limbs, trims, or whatever is needed at that time. We have just had the team at Hillbilly Hustle (434-826-8349) complete a good bit of landscaping work at our home on the golf course and are extremely pleased. On the recommendation of Jackson Cox at Wintergreen Hardware, we reached out to Andy and Dick for help with controlling the brush and growth on our hill. The job required removing all weeds and small saplings, grading the piles of rocks and stones, and moving the large pile of wood chip mulch to be spread evenly across the hill for future weed control. They were fast, professional, polite, and affordable. They left the site clean and neat. We highly recommend them and will most definitely be using them again. If you are looking for a lawn service to fertilize and control weeds, consider Virginia Green. All of the lawn services in this area are pricey. They all try to upsell you with additional services. They all want you to sign an annual contract. Last year I signed up with Virginia Green (434-975-0100, contactvagreen@virginiagreenlawncare.com) which, after a chat, offered me a lower-cost "lite" package of services with just five visits a year (vs seven visits). By paying each visit at a time and forgoing the small discount that comes with a contract, I can cancel at any time. Virginia Green's employees were careful and polite. Vince and his team at Zen Tree Services (434-260-3865, vince@zentreeservices.com) are amazing, responsive, reasonably priced, timely, and left all the sites in a better condition than they were before. They removed three trees that were dying and posed a risk to nearby structures, pruned three others next to our house, and chipped everything for mulch. One tree removal was particularly complex, requiring rigging to take down the tree section by section to prevent damage to the shed and nearby trees. We would absolutely use him again. We have just had Zen Tree Service perform significant tree pruning of our 100+-year-old white and red oak trees in Stoney Creek. Vince and the team were prompt and professional. This summer we looked at several recent installations of stonework patios around Wintergreen before turning to Creation Appreciation (540-456-6196) to put in a bluestone patio in our front yard. It was the right decision. The attention to detail was excellent, but more impressive was how when the plan went a bit sideways the management and crew handled the problems with ease. We can highly recommend Creation Appreciation (540-456-6196) who worked with us on a hardscape design that included an apron at the front of our stone driveway, a stone walkway along the front of our house, and the repair and improvement of paver steps and walkway on the side and in the back of our house. The project took over 3 weeks. The crew who performed the work was extremely skilled and meticulous in the placement of every single stone and paver. At the end of each day, they stored their tools and equipment and made sure all trash and debris were removed. Chris Kell worked closely with his team and checked in with us almost daily. It was almost magical how the crew from Creation Appreciation (540-456-6196) convinced the tree that the heavy snow brought slowly down on our house to fly up and away with zero additional damage to the rhododendron under it, not to mention our house. It's wasn't magic, but instead skillful roping and tactical cutting on our steep roof to remove the weight of the tree's limbs so that leverage shifted, allowing the roped tree to lift itself up and swing harmlessly away from the house into the yard. It was hilarious. The crew then ran the entire tree and all of our downed limbs into their huge shredder and cleaned up the area with leafblowers. The bill for this expertise was very reasonable. Our neighbors highly recommended Little Man Landscaping (Ja1264200@gmail.com; 434-509-7618) and now I know why. We hired them to deliver and spread mulch throughout our mountain landscaping. To our delight, they pulled weeds before laying down the mulch, edged the beds so the groundcover looked tidy, and carefully spread the mulch between plants. They blew off the driveway on their way out. We were incredibly impressed with their attention to detail, hard work, and reasonable pricing. I called them based on other recommendations for them on the WTG Bulletin website. I have to say that from the on-time arrival at 8:30 am to the organized and industrious work getting rid of a large quantity of leaves buried among thick groundcover, and the distribution of mulch exactly as I specified was done perfectly by Manual Lopez and his professional team. We emailed Manuel Lopez last week about cleaning out our gutters and he responded within hours. He came out at the appointed time and gave us a very good estimate and showed up the next week as he said he would. • On August 31 Big O Tree and Lawn Service (540-337-4588) removed two large oak trees that were in danger of falling on the street in front of my Wintergreen mountain home. They were joined together and rotten at the base. The three-man crew arrived on time with a surprising amount of equipment. They developed a plan and worked together like a well–oiled machine, completing the job in four hours. They cut up the best sections into 15-17-inch logs to fit my woodstove (the logs still need splitting). Cleanup along the street was done to perfection. The price was $2,350. We recently had Tom's Yardscape (tomsyardscape.net, 540-949-TOMS) of Stuarts Draft complete an upgrade to our driveway and yard/house perimeter to remediate drainage issues that caused a soggy corner and add curb appeal to the property. Old mulch under our front and back decks was replaced with gravel; a loose gravel driveway was widened and coated with compact crushed gravel; a pathway was created encircling the house to stop encroaching weed and small plant growth; and a large stone drainage swag was built along the back slope to divert rainwater from the foundation. The new driveway looks almost like asphalt yet will accommodate future tree root growth with ease. Our lot looks prettier while still retaining the greenery characteristics of our mountain environs. Tom Hughes was quick to respond to my inquiry, walked the lot with me to share his ideas. He returned his estimate within days. His son TJ managed the work and has great artistic vision. In fact, he made suggestions as we worked through the job that I accepted immediately due to his thorough description. Their service was quick and professional.
