Responding to the recent request for home builder recommendations, consider Sun Structures. Inc., owned and operated by John Donne and his son Timothy. John has been a home builder in this area for over 35 years. He constructed our house in Stoney Creek, which we purchased new in 2006. He has also built homes on Wintergreen mountain, among many others in this area. While looking at homes in Stoney Creek, we visited our house periodically while under construction before deciding to purchase it. We met John several times and were impressed with the quality of the work and the time he spent with us detailing the many aspects of the construction and the fact that he was (and still is) a hands-on builder. In the following years, we hired John on a number of projects in and around our home, including finishing our basement and several carpentry projects. • We recently had a complete renovation of our condo done, including kitchen and bath remodel, installation of vinyl plank flooring, electrical work including ceiling fan installation and baseboard heater replacement, popcorn ceiling removal, complete interior painting, and hot water tank replacement. We highly recommend Matt Layton (434 882-4659). He was very professional, courteous, and neat. We stayed at the condo on and off throughout the process and Matt was very communicative in letting us know what time he would be arriving and planned out the projects to minimize the disruption. Above all, we found him to be very trustworthy and respectful. It can be difficult to have someone working in your home, but Matt was very easy to work with. He is a true perfectionist, working methodically and intentionally on every detail.
Also, for this project, we purchased the flooring from Judi Cave at Shenandoah Flooring in Waynesboro. They have a great selection of flooring and tile. The kitchen cabinetry was designed and ordered through Dovetail Cabinetry & Design in Staunton. Scott Woofter was our kitchen designer and we were able to have cabinets replaced for a better price than was quoted by Lowe’s or Home Depot. We are very happy with our results. We use Family Run Disposal for trash pickup at our home. They provide a rental bear-proof trash can. You can also provide your own. They pick up both trash and recycling from our Stoney Creek home on Mondays. The cost is $25 per month including receptacle rental. We have had Verizon landline phone service since we bought our condo on Wintergreen mountain almost 30 years ago. As we can use our cellphones from our condo, we had the most minimal Verizon plan—911 service, no long distance and per call charges for local calls.
For this minimal service, after a rate increase from Verizon, our monthly service fee including taxes, fees, etc., (but not counting any per call charges) was $33, or $400 per year. Danny’s Quality Upholstery (434-293-3506) on Ivy Road did an excellent job for us on dining room chairs. They have no problem using your own fabric unlike some that want to make extra bucks using marked-up samples you can buy online for much less.
