I highly recommend Brad Davis, the owner of Rockfish Valley Construction. He specializes in carpentry but is also a licensed and insured contractor. He recently took our idea of creating custom built-in shelving for our mud room and quickly turned it into reality. The finished shelving looks like it is part of the original home, and will offer us some much-needed storage. He added trim to coordinate with the rest of our home and moved the air and electrical vents to the base so they were still usable. He showed up when expected at all times, and worked our job until it was completed. Every aspect of our experience with Brad was highly professional. We highly recommend the father-son team (Randy Teter and Steven Teter) of Custom Ornamental Iron in Waynesboro for custom-made indoor and outdoor handrails and any ornamental ironwork. They are skilled craftsmen who have worked together for 20 years, creating amazing works of art. All of their work is customized and specifically fitted to your needs. After consulting with us and making some wise suggestions, last week they installed four different handrails they crafted for us, leading up steps and around our front porch. The workmanship is beautiful. They stayed true to their initial estimate and completed the work in a timely manner.  They do not have a website; all of their marketing comes from word-of-mouth. We initially learned about them through the Wintergreen Bulletin Board's subscribers' recommendations. We could not be happier with what they created for us. I would like to recommend Randy Teter and his son Steven for custom ornamental ironwork. They designed and built wrought iron hand railings for the front of our house. They also do all sorts of inside work as well as architectural designs- railings, balustrades, fencing, gates, etc. Really nice people to work with. If you are looking for a lawn service to fertilize and control weeds, consider Virginia Green. All of the lawn services in this area are pricey. They all try to upsell you with additional services. They all want you to sign an annual contract. Last year I signed up with Virginia Green (434-975-0100, contactvagreen@virginiagreenlawncare.com) which, after a chat, offered me a lower-cost "lite" package of services with just five visits a year (vs seven visits). By paying each visit at a time and forgoing the small discount that comes with a contract, I can cancel at any time. Virginia Green's employees were careful and polite. We had a dental emergency at dinner last Monday evening. On Tuesday at 8 am, we called Dr. Jim Rice’s office in Nellysford (434-277-2232) for help. My wife was in the chair by 9:30 am. Her tooth was broken so far down it had to be pulled. We were back home on the mountain by our woodstove by 11 enjoying a cup of soup. We tried Peace of Mind Property Services' plumber Muriah Kurpel (434-361-2804) to install a new kitchen faucet with a soap dispenser. I called on a Monday and got a call back immediately, and once it was determined that it was not an emergency, an appointment was set up for Thursday. Kurper and her assistant arrived on time, moved quickly with good humor, and did a good job working in an awkward space, even filling up the new soap dispenser before leaving. The bill came a few days later and was very reasonable. (I also had an awkward and heavy piece of gear I needed help with to move from the garage to upstairs. Two thumbs up for Janny Bird Sewing Company on Main Street in Lovingston. She does a lot of costume and bridal work and has a great reputation for that among the locals. When we needed some zippers replaced in several cardigans, and two sets of window curtains resized after remounting, she didn't "look down" on our smaller jobs. I learned about Janelle Harrop's sewing talents from the WBB. A year ago I used her talents to have a pile of everyday clothing altered and was blown away by her expertise. She has done freelance sewing while working other jobs until just a few months ago when she put her Jannybird Sewing Co. (434-249-0914. JannyBirdSewingCo.com) into a storefront in Lovingston at 179 Main St. (below the Blue Star Music). She was the runner-up finalist in a small business grant competition, she won a grant to start her business after one of the four top finalists dropped out. I recommend Janelle Harrop as an excellent seamstress. I had seven sets of 9-foot drapes that I wanted to have repurposed for my two-bedroom Stone Ridge Woods Condo. Not only did Janelle measure and remake my drapery perfectly, but she helped me with rods, hooks, finials, weights, dimensions, and selections. I was able to have all the hardware sent to her, and she separated and labeled all for installation. She hung the drapes and sent me pictures of the finished rooms. Moving from the Wintergreen Mountain to Stoney Creek went well in large part to the great job the crew Lawrence Moving sent us. They are a major United Van Lines enterprise based in nearby Lyndhurst but they handle local short and small jobs as well. We had several antiques with ancient glass and some very large and heavy furniture pieces as well. And there was a lot of boxes of books.
