Rob Mansfield is a long-time Wintergreen contractor. He's an all-around nice guy who doesn't laugh when you call him in to take over the repair projects you tried and failed to do yourself. Over the years Mansfield's Handyman Service has fixed a leak in my roof when no one else would come for weeks, installed a ceiling fan, put in light fixtures, rewired the electrical outlets on our deck, provided some major carpentry work, and more. GF&M Glass & Remodeling is the name of Gordon Miller's business, but he was the contractor recommended in 2014 when our 35+-year-old house on the mountain required some extensive work and thoughtful re-engineering to repair the floor joint that had rotted. It wasn't easy or cheap, but they did it right. They have also installed a patio door for us and replaced the cracked window with safety glass that had to be done from the outside–three stories up–since the window in the shower was framed in tile. Huffman Siding 540-377-2615

We talked to everyone we could to find the best person to put up new cedar siding on our mountain house in 2013. The one name came up time and again Bobbie Huffman. "This is the guy you want," we were told when we explained we wanted a high-quality job. We got three bids from well-known Wintergreen contractors and Huffman's was the highest, but only slightly, so we took the advice we were given with high expectations which were exceeded. Just to give you an idea: Each of the cedar boards were stained offsite first, with each piece of siding measured and cut for its space. The boards were stained again onsite on both sides; after each cut the ends had stain applied. Any exposed ends–even tiny spots–were wrapped with metal. And so on. It seemed to take forever, but it was well worth the time and money. He works with Hardie Board siding as well as wood. His crew also installed a new window, carefully rebuilding the frame. We were very pleased with the custom-built wrought iron railings for our front porch made and installed by Associated Fabricators in May. The small Charlottesville business had no issues with coming out to Stoney Creek. Mountain Services - 434-325-7711

I’ve used Mountain Services (434-325-7711) for years. They replaced our water heater when we lived in the Cliffs and I expect to be calling them soon to replace the water heater in our house. Submitted by Robert Peirce. March 2022

Because it was a relatively small job, I had trouble finding anyone willing to do my fireplace stone repair until I called Mountain Services (434-325-7711). José did a beautiful repair job. I’m going to have him back in the spring to do some touch-up work on the outside stone. He can do an entire fireplace if that’s what you need but he may be the only one around willing to handle these smaller stonework jobs we all run into.

I have used Mountain Services to take care of my property for the past six years. When we first bought the house they closed off a screened-in porch, replaced the decking, and did a lot of other stuff. Since then I’ve called them on numerous occasions for other things. They’ve never let me down. I also retain them to check the property when I’m not here.

Also, I had no spare stone pieces around so I went to Valley Building Supply in Staunton (540-886-3990). They have cultured stone from many sources. I was able to find an almost exact match. My bet is you can match pretty much anything there. Submitted by Robert Peirce.

Wintergreen M&M - 434-996-2176

• Sam and Shawn Mazlack of Wintergreen M&M (434-996-2176) just installed new windows on my all-cedar-wood home on the mountain. As always, they did a beautiful job. • We hired M&M to do a serious revamp of the exterior of our home that included power washing everything, repairing as needed, caulking all seams, and painting both trim and siding. I was impressed that the workers were taking the time to do the job right and not hurrying to just get it done. We were very pleased with their work and would hire them again. Last week we had a very good experience with Apple Door Systems (540-943-7180, based in Waynesboro) in getting our garage door repaired. The crew came out the day after we called, they had the part that our 20-year-old huge wooden garage door needed, and the cost was very reasonable. They even offer immediate emergency services. R Williams Paving & Sealing - 434-984-2480

We had been trying to have our driveway sealed for over a year. It was an extremely frustrating experience. Most contractors did not bother returning phone calls. (We hear this complaint from all our neighbors and friends in the area, no matter what they are trying to have done. And then, it’s as if contractors up their price because you live in Wintergreen!) Our original request to have our driveway repaired and resealed was in the spring of 2018. In the summer of 2018, the paving contractor completed only half the job and had not communicated with us (as of spring 2019) about completing the sealing. We finally contacted R Williams Paving & Sealing. From day one, they were excellent about communicating–whether to make an appointment for an estimate, scheduling the job, or rescheduling when the weather was an issue. The water table is very high in many parts of Stoney Creek and many of us have had issues with water in basements or crawl spaces. If you did not intend water in your basement or crawl space for a swimming pool, I highly recommend Evergreen Basement (now JES, but if you google Evergreen Basement they come up). https://www.jeswork.com/evergreen-basement-systems/. The group we used was out of Appomattox. Evergreen was pricier than some other basement/crawl space businesses in the area, but they were the ONLY one we found who can deliver a state of the art product guaranteed for 20 years and could also provide us a solution instead of a patch. Wintergreen Bulletin Board helped us find Benjamin Martin of Nelson Tile to install our kitchen backsplash tile. We chose him because of his love of craft and attention to detail. We had a small but slightly awkward job involving removing and replacing some of the tiles around the tub in our master bathroom. I hired Ben Martin of Nelson Tile to install a backsplash in my kitchen. Ben is very knowledgeable about tile work. He made suggestions that I hadn't thought of. The tiles I chose were tiny tiles that had irregular surfaces and were not easy to grout, but the results are outstanding! He was prompt, reasonable, and proficient. He lives locally.
