How the vote this April on new Congressional map could impact Wintergreen

Proposed Virginia US Congressional Map to be voted on in April was released last Thursday.

If approved, Virginia’s redistricting referendum (slated to take place on April 21) could have a major impact on voters in Wintergreen in both Nelson and Augusta counties, according to reporting by Cardinal News.

Most Wintergreen properties are in Nelson County. According to the map on the General Assembly’s Legislative Information Service website under HB 29, Nelson would be grouped in a new US Congressional District 6 which would be geographically smaller than the current 5th District.

“The newly drawn 6th District would likely pit former journalist and bestselling author Beth Macy of Roanoke against former Congressman Tom Perriello of Charlottesville in a primary election to determine who will take on Republican incumbent Rep. Ben Cline, of Botetourt County, in November,” Cardinal News' Elizabeth Beyer reported on Thursday.

Augusta County is being carved up in the proposed redistricting. The 233 Wintergreen properties on the mountain in Augusta County would no longer be grouped with most of the county and Waynesboro, but instead be part of the 9th District that includes all of Southwest Virginia. “Under this map, the 9th District, represented by Rep. Morgan Griffith of Salem, would likely be the last remaining Republican stronghold,” Beyer’s report said.
